About Us

The Beginning

While volunteering at a rescue in Fayette County, Georgia I was responsible for inputting the data from the pet folders and vet invoices into the database. It was there that I was introduced to a different side of animal rescue. I continued volunteering, fostering, working in animal rescue always having a desire to do more.

Through my research to contribute more I worked with other shelters, rescues and individual animal rescuers.

Animal shelters/rescues are essential. They care for homeless, abused, sick or abandoned animals and try to give them a temporary, warm, loving home. Without them, there would be countless animals on the street. However, breeding is out-of-control and at a faster pace than shelters or rescues can save them.

Georgia is overwhelmed with uncontrolled breeding, too many strays and owner surrenders. Animal shelters/rescues and humane societies are turning away animals in need due to overcrowding and not enough fosters further contributing to the pet overpopulation. Many of these animals end up being euthanized. According to the animal shelter statistics, Georgia ranks 5th with 43,000 killed shelter animals in 2022.

This is how Miss Shirley’s Place (MSP) was born and the 501(c)(3) non-profit was formed in 2022. The mission offers a proactive solution in reducing the pet overpopulation where there are more animals than homes.

At MSP, we share the view that the companion pet overpopulation crisis is overwhelming and the deaths and suffering of homeless animals is hugely preventable, but MSP would take a different approach by offering the most effective means in combating the pet overpopulation and suffering. That is to provide no cost spay/neuter surgeries to low income and financially struggling pet owners. Spay/neuter costs are high. Even the lower-cost alternatives can be at least $150 per animal plus the additional transportation cost. Our goal is to provide funding for spay/neuter of as many animals as possible to reduce uncontrolled breeding, homeless animals, and euthanasia rates.

Spay/neuter is the most impactful solution in reducing over breeding and preventing thousands of unwanted dogs and cats from crowded animal shelters/rescues. Locally, MSP is the only spay/neuter humane society among the multiple humane societies.
